Forge welding

Midsummer's eve (many years ago) when I took on a project for a pattern welded Damascus steel blade.

The forge was illuminated by candles and one lantern, and I was under strict instructions by the client on when during Midsummer Night's eve to do the pattern welding on his blade.

The image demonstrates the instant when the hammer strikes, where the sudden pressure of its impact coupled with the right temperature welds all the layers into one solid bar.

For reference, that's a 7 pound half sledge hammer I'm using one handed mounted on a 15 inch haft made by me from Hickory.

A legacy of my misspent youth...
